HEGEMON publishes original reporting, analysis and argument on geoeconomics: how states, firms and institutions use economic power, and how geopolitical competition is reshaping the global economy.
We are interested in the points where markets and power collide, from trade, investment and finance to industrial policy, technology, infrastructure, energy and critical resources. We also publish reporting and analysis focused on particular regions and strategically important sectors.
The best pitches do more than identify an interesting subject. They make an argument. Tell us what has changed, why it has changed, who gains or loses as a result, and what the wider consequences are. A pitch about critical minerals in Southeast Asia is a topic; a pitch explaining why attempts to move mineral processing onshore risk replacing dependence on China with dependence on foreign capital is a story.
We value specialist knowledge, original reporting and informed analysis, but HEGEMON is written for an engaged audience beyond any single profession or discipline. Pieces should make complex economic, political and technical systems intelligible without flattening them.
The best guide to what we are looking for is the work already published in HEGEMON.
What We Are Looking For
We welcome pitches across HEGEMON’s principal areas of coverage, including Trade, Investment, Finance, Industrial Policy, and Data & Technology, as well as contributions focused on particular Regions and Sectors.
We are particularly interested in pieces that uncover:
- emerging sources of economic leverage or dependency;
- overlooked chokepoints in markets, infrastructure or supply chains;
- changes in the relationship between states and firms;
- the geopolitical consequences of regulation, ownership and investment;
- attempts by governments to build economic security or strategic autonomy;
- shifts in the institutions and infrastructure underpinning the global economy.
We are less interested in commentary on events for their own sake. A strong HEGEMON piece should use events to reveal something larger about how economic power works.
What to Send Us
Please send a pitch of two to four paragraphs explaining the central argument of the proposed piece and how you intend to make it.
Your pitch should explain why the piece matters now, what evidence or reporting will support it, and what a HEGEMON reader will understand by the end that they did not understand at the beginning.
Please also include a short author biography, any relevant professional or regional expertise, and links to previous work where available.
We welcome pitches from academics, professionals, journalists, as well as early career scholars and practitioners. Strong ideas matter more to us than publication history.
How to Submit
Send pitches to Brendan Van Crout, Deputy Managing Editor of Outreach & Features (bvancrout@geoeconomics.fi) with PITCH: followed by a concise description of the proposed article in the subject line.
Please tell us if the pitch is under consideration elsewhere. If you have not heard from us within two weeks, please assume that we are unable to take the piece forward on this occasion.
